Correctional Boot Camps: An Early Release to What?
Early release from
prison is a good thing, especially if it involves some form of rehabilitation attached
to it. However, offering military-like
boot camps is the most ridiculous form of treatment that many correctional
departments have ever manifested. How
does acting like a watered-down soldier, or in my opinion, a cub scout,
properly transition an inmate into the real world? It does not.
These programs serve no purpose except for early release, and usually
are operated by people who wish they were, or still were, in the nation’s armed
services. Making a person become good at
exercising, squaring corners, speaking in forms of language that are not
common, and telling them that they are not allowed to sit down for more than
twelve hours makes no god damn sense for when it comes to transitional services and
real life applicability. Also, given the
demographics of most American prisons today, African Americans are again being
forced to endure racist behavior by the so-called drill instructors. Second to this, arrays of studies have denounced
the ability of correctional boot camps’ plausibility in respect to recidivism –
in fact, a lot of scholarly literature says that there is not much of a
difference in the recidivism rates when compared to an inmate who did not participate
in the barrage of Eighth Amendment violations.
Many of the places suggest that they offer discipline and second chances
for first-time offenders, yet with the high recidivism rates being known, and
the outrageous actions by the professionals who work at these places, the DOCs
around the nation become full of shit in their practices and regurgitations
of “providing services to reduce criminal activity.”
After reading the
aforementioned content, many advocates of unethical behavior and Eighth
Amendment rights violations will say that the boot camps offer counseling or
some type of job training that allows inmates to deal with their struggles and
also allows them to be employable – this is complete bullshit and another
verification that the correctional executives are peons and have no clue what
they’re talking about. Jamming herds of
inmates into a room and giving them some lecture about drug use or some other
course of mental health treatment by some jackass who wishes that they were Mr.
Rogers is as dumb as dumb can be. Once
more, it is another verification that duress is used to get inmates to comply
and do what some other jerk-off thinks is necessary for them. Idiots.
The vocational training at boot camps is far-and-few-between, and if it
is offered the stereotypes of ex-offenders usually make the employability that
is being projected a farce and a bigger pile of bullshit. What the fuck is this weird racist and
wannabe military regime that we are making non-violent offenders
endure? Who the fuck thought that this
would be a good idea? Most likely some
peon who thinks that the idea of communism only entails the Soviet-American Cold War
– ugh.
Again, the idea of early release is great, but when it turns into a scam that usually leads to recidivism, inhumane and cruel treatment, and bat shit crazy ideas, then, it may be time to reconsider the type of early release that we’re deploying into our society. And since we’re doing watered down versions of military boot camp, we should just get it over with and let the armed forces take this over and do the job correctly – give inmates discipline and weapons training – it is what we are basically doing anyways, right? Rather than only going back to prison at the same rate at which a non-boot camp inmate does, we can train them to be soldiers with weapons training and let them into society with machine guns and flame throwers. I said it before, and I’ll say it again, kindness and realistic treatment seems to work, we should try that instead of being the typical gun touting Americans that we are and thinking in our angry frame of mind that usually causes more hate and anger. Unusual, America. In brief, prison-based boot camps are fuckin’ ridiculous and serve no legitimate purpose. All they are is a breeding ground for douchebags and wannabe drill instructors (some who have never served in our nation’s armed services – that’s disrespectful to people who have served our country) and does the exact opposite of the intentions of the program -- they turn people into life-long clients of the criminal justice system. What a sneaky way to retain one's job. I call it asshole behavior, what about you?
